Have You Revisited Your Why?

Hi Coach Jeri Here!
We are all individuals, and we all have our own reasons for joining a weight loss program. In the beginning many of us will have the same simple motivation of just wanting to lose weight.

So, why are told that it is important to focus in on “why”, the “WHY” we are doing this?

It is an impactful technique to focus on the true motivation of having a specific goal. Everyone’s WHY is personal, for many it is emotional too. For some it could be a new private motivation, while for others it could be tied to an event like a family wedding or reunion.

Short term goals such as these could require us to re-evaluate our why as a way to keep us motivated and on track. When a goal passes, there is the possibility that the motivation starts to lessen and old habits creep in. That is when we need to “check in ” and examine where we stand going forward.

For me, my WHY has changed many times over the years. At first like many, I just simply, wanted to take off those extra pounds. Years later I found out I was a borderline type 2 diabetic. My goal since I was told I had an elevated A1C, was to stay off medication. Many of our members have a similar WHY, to get healthy, have better numbers or get off medication.

The most successful maintainers of weight loss seem to be able to constantly refocus and have a sustainable life plan.

Strive for insight.

  • The first week of every month sit down and write out how the past month went and what you expect for the new month.
  • Zero in on what you really want to accomplish.
  • Get to know yourself and what you realistically expect to happen over a month’s time.

This type of insight will help you get to a better understanding your “WHY”.

The more insight you gain, the more knowledge you will have to deal with the unexpected, by holding your WHY close to you. This is the best way to plan for your future and have success.

Make a monthly contract with yourself and think of it as your investment into your health and well-being, and most of all your happiness. Losing focus and your WHY is a pitfall easy to fall into. You are capable of making good decisions and good choices in every other part of your life. So trust yourself to do the same on your weight loss journey. The human mind is the most powerful tool of accomplishment. Project that image in your mind of what you want and focus on it constantly. Remember your best WHY to keep you motivated and keep you going, to creating the new you!
